LE ROLE DE LA LANGUE FRANÇAISE DANS LES RELATIONS DIPLOMATIQUES ENTRE LE NIGERIA ET LE BÉNIN
Abstract
Abstract Nigeria and Benin are located in a geopolitical zone where cross-border trade, security cooperation, and bilateral agreements are frequent. The two countries must overcome the language barrier to strengthen their collaboration. However, the language barrier between Nigeria, an English-speaking country, and Benin, a French-speaking country, poses a major obstacle to smooth collaboration. Using the qualitative method, this study examines the crucial role of the French language in diplomacy between these two nations, highlighting the importance of professional translators in a context where precision in communication is essential. For Nigeria, whose foreign policy aims to protect its interests while promoting regional integration, proficiency in French becomes a major diplomatic asset. However, many border agents do not master either the official languages or the local languages, which leads to misunderstandings. Thus, multilingualism, French training, and effective translation appear as strategic levers. This is the conclusion of the study that the French language is therefore not just a tool, but a necessity to strengthen diplomatic ties, facilitate trade, ensure security, and guaranty lasting mutual understanding between Nigeria and Benin. Nigeria must therefore pay more attention to the use of French, especially being surrounded by French-speaking countries.
