Communicative Approach in Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language
Abstract
The communicative approach has become one of the most effective methodologies in teaching Russian as a foreign language, emphasising meaningful interaction and real-life communication. This article explores the theoretical foundations and practical applications of the communicative approach in Russian language instruction, highlighting its impact on students’ linguistic competence, motivation, and confidence. Unlike traditional grammar-focused methods, the communicative approach prioritises the ability to use Russian in authentic contexts, encouraging learners to engage actively in dialogues, role-plays, and problem-solving activities. Incorporating this approach enables teachers to create learner-centred environments that foster interaction and collaboration. Students are exposed to real-world language situations through multimedia resources, online communication platforms, and group tasks, which help develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills simultaneously. Furthermore, the communicative approach supports learner autonomy, as students are encouraged to participate in peer discussions, self-assess their progress, and practice Russian outside the classroom. This study also addresses challenges in implementing the communicative approach, such as limited classroom time, varying proficiency levels, and the need for teacher training in communicative techniques. Despite these obstacles, research shows that integrating communicative strategies in Russian language teaching improves learners’ overall competence, increases motivation, and prepares them for authentic communication in academic, professional, and social contexts. Overall, the communicative approach provides a dynamic framework for teaching Russian, promoting not only language acquisition but also critical thinking, creativity, and intercultural competence, which are essential for learners in the modern globalised world.
