Addressing Plastic Pollution: Innovative Green Technologies and Bioremediation for Environmental and Health Protection
Abstract
Plastic pollution poses severe environmental and health risks, particularly in marine ecosystems where it leads to the entanglement, ingestion, and poisoning of marine life. Micro-plastics, which can accumulate in the food chain, have been found in the digestive systems of various marine species, potentially causing long-term harm to biodiversity. Additionally, plastic leachates contain toxic chemicals that can affect the health of both animals and humans, leading to respiratory issues, cardiovascular disease, and other health complications. The persistence of plastic in the environment contributes to widespread pollution, disproportionately affecting low-income and marginalized communities. In response, green technology offers innovative solutions to address these challenges. These include the development of biodegradable plastics, which degrade more easily in natural environments, and advanced recycling technologies that enhance the efficiency of plastic waste management. Additionally, bioremediation techniques, using microbes and enzymes, are being explored to break down plastics more effectively. By integrating these green technologies with comprehensive policy measures and public awareness initiatives, we can significantly reduce plastic pollution and mitigate its harmful effects on both the environment and human health.
