Radiotherapy Techniques: Precision and Advances
Abstract
Radiotherapy remains a cornerstone of modern cancer management, employing ionizing radiation to induce DNA damage in malignant cells and achieve effective tumor control. Over recent decades, radiotherapy has evolved from conventional two-dimensional techniques to highly sophisticated, precision-driven modalities that maximize tumor targeting while minimizing toxicity to surrounding normal tissues. Contemporary approaches such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), and proton therapy have significantly improved dose conformity, treatment efficiency, and patient outcomes. Technological innovations, including magnetic resonance linear accelerators (MR-LINAC), automated treatment planning systems, and the emergence of FLASH radiotherapy, have further refined radiation delivery through real-time imaging, adaptive planning, and ultra-high dose-rate exposure. These advancements allow individualized treatment strategies based on tumor characteristics, location, and stage, thereby reducing treatment-related morbidity and improving quality of life. While novel techniques show considerable promise, careful patient selection and continued clinical validation remain essential. Ongoing progress in radiotherapy underscores its expanding role in precision oncology and its potential to further transform cancer care.
