Advanced Cardiac Imaging Technologies: A New Era Of Clarity And Precision
Abstract
Advanced cardiac imaging has undergone remarkable transformation over the past century, evolving from basic radiographic techniques to highly sophisticated, multimodal diagnostic tools that provide detailed structural, functional, and molecular insights into the heart. This chapter reviews contemporary advances in cardiac imaging technologies that have redefined cardiovascular diagnosis and management. Key developments include the integration of artificial intelligence for rapid and accurate image interpretation, hybrid imaging modalities such as PET-CT and PET-MRI that combine anatomical and functional assessment, and innovations in cardiac MRI including T1/T2 mapping and 4D flow imaging. Advances in low-dose coronary CT angiography have improved coronary artery disease evaluation while minimizing radiation exposure. Emerging fields such as molecular imaging enable visualization of cellular and inflammatory processes, allowing earlier disease detection and risk stratification. The chapter also highlights progress in echocardiography, particularly real-time 3D imaging and strain analysis, as well as future prospects including ultra-fast and quantum imaging technologies. Collectively, these innovations are driving a shift toward more precise, non-invasive, and personalized cardiovascular care.
