Abstract

Uric acid, a catabolic end product of human purine nucleosides, is linked to cardiovascular events and hyperuricemia. It is degraded by the enzyme uricase, which was muted in human and ape ancestors about 15 million years ago. The present study aims to assess the level of serum uric acid among patients with Myocardial Infarction (MI) and Atrial Fibrillation (AF) in comparison to controls. The current study was conducted at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in department of cardiology. There were 102 diagnosed with MI, and 52 patients with AF, and 100 age-matched control patients, The Data is collected based on age, gender, ethnicity, medical history, risk factors, and uric acid levels. A uric acid test was run on a Roche chemistry analyzer in the hospital laboratory. The quantitative measurement of uric acid in human blood serum using an in vitro test. The cutoff value of serum uric acid is > 6.1. Out of 102 patients with MI, 46 males and 16 females had UA levels exceeding 6.1. In case of AF, 12 males and 20 females are with UA > 6.1. The result showed a significant association between hyperuricemia with MI, AF, and gender. Based on the findings of our study, a raised level of serum uric acid is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes.
