The Role of Mazhabs in Preserving the Unity of the Muslim Legal Tradition
Abstract
This article provides an in-depth analysis of the concept of madhab, its historical context, and its fundamental significance for Muslim practice. Madhab, as a system of legal and theological views, plays a crucial role in shaping the Islamic worldview and practice, ensuring unity and consensus among the followers of Islam. Special attention is given to the importance of adhering to a specific madhab, even if one has their own personal understanding of the Quran and sunnah. The article emphasizes that individual interpretation of the texts of the holy scriptures without proper preparation and understanding can lead to a distortion of the true meaning of Islam. In addition, it provides historical examples of how following the madhhab has contributed to the preservation of harmony and stability in Muslim societies. The article also addresses the contemporary challenges faced by Muslims in the context of globalization and access to information, emphasizing the importance of consulting authoritative sources and scholars for a proper understanding of religious norms. In conclusion, the article calls for respect for the traditions and authority of the madhhabs as a necessary condition for preserving the integrity and unity of the Islamic community. It is argued that religious matters should be addressed exclusively through qualified scholars who possess deep knowledge and experience in Islamic law and theology. Refusing to accept their authoritative opinions is seen as a potential threat to the unity of the Muslim community (Ummah) and could lead to disagreements and misunderstandings among Muslims.
