Demography of Danger: Youth Bulge and the New Age of Crime
Abstract
This monograph investigates the youth bulge, a demographic phenomenon where a disproportionate share of the population is aged 15 to 29, and its potential to catalyze social instability in developing nations. Utilizing sociological frameworks such as Strain Theory and Social Disorganization Theory, the authors analyze how demographic pressure, when met with institutional inertia and economic stagnation, fosters a "new age of crime". The study explores evolving criminal modalities, including cybercrime, organized gang violence, and political extremism, particularly within Pakistan, the MENA region, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Key drivers of desperation are identified, including "educated unemployment," skills mismatches, and unplanned urbanization, which collectively erode the social contract. The work argues that avoiding a demographic disaster requires urgent policy interventions to bridge the socio-economic disconnect and provide legitimate opportunities for this burgeoning generation.
