Abstract

Javanese script (aksara Jawa) is a learning material introduced to students starting from the third grade of elementary school. Based on observations conducted at SD Negeri 02 Ambowetan and SD Negeri 04 Sukorejo, a problem was identified in the form of students’ low interest in learning Javanese script. This condition is caused by students’ limited ability to read and write Javanese script. One proposed solution to overcome this problem is the development of a spelling game learning board. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design consisting of the following stages: (1) identifying potential and problems, (2) data collection, (3) product design, (4) design validation, and (5) design revision. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The research resulted in a learning media product in the form of a spelling game. This medium takes the form of a magnetic board that can be used by students to learn to read Javanese script. The game board consists of four main components: (1) tebak aksara (guessing the script), (2) ngecakake gambar (matching pictures), (3) maca tembung (reading words), and (4) maca ukara (reading sentences). In the tebak aksara section, a magnetic board and magnetic cut-outs are provided, and students are asked to attach the cut-outs to the board according to the corresponding Javanese script. In the ngecakake gambar section, students match pictures with words written in Javanese script on the magnetic board. In the maca tembung section, students read words written in Javanese script and then write them in the space provided below. In the maca ukara section, students read sentences and answer the questions provided for each number. The validation test results indicate that the spelling game learning media is suitable for use in teaching Javanese script reading to third-grade elementary school students.
