Abstract

Palatability is a critical factor in the acceptance and compliance of oral solutions, particularly in the pediatric and geriatric populations, where challenges in taste perception often led to reluctance in medication adherence. This review delves into the strategies employed for enhancing the palatability of oral solutions with a primary focus on the evaluation of ion exchange resin-based taste masking in comparison to other methods. The investigation encompasses a thorough examination of traditional taste-masking techniques, such as sweetening agents and flavoring agents, as well as novel approaches like encapsulation and complexation. The ion exchange resin-based taste masking method emerges as a promising contender, offering advantages in terms of efficiency, stability, and versatility. A critical analysis of literature comparing the efficacy of ion exchange resin-based taste masking against other methods provides valuable insights into its potential applications and limitations. Furthermore, this review explores the mechanistic aspects of ion exchange resin-based taste masking, shedding light on how these resins interact with drug molecules to mitigate undesirable taste characteristics. The impact of formulation variables, such as resin type, loading capacity, and particle size, on the overall success of taste masking is thoroughly examined. In addition to the technical aspects, the review highlights the practical implications of utilizing ion exchange resin-based taste masking in the pharmaceutical industry. Considerations such as regulatory compliance, cost-effectiveness, and scalability are discussed to provide a comprehensive overview of the feasibility and practicality of incorporating this method into pharmaceutical formulations. Ultimately, this review aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers, formulators, and pharmaceutical professionals seeking a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape of taste-masking techniques, with a specific emphasis on the potential of ion exchange resin-based methods in enhancing the palatability of oral solutions.
