Understanding the worldviews of different cultures is essential for fostering intercultural understanding and strengthening relationships. This study aims to analyze the worldview of the people of Battambang as reflected in the Khmer document “Battambang During the Time of the Lord Governor” by Tauch Chhuong. The study adopts the concept of worldview proposed by Robert Redfield, together with perspectives from Thai scholars who have examined worldview in literature and language. The findings reveal that the worldview of the Battambang people, as presented in the document, can be classified into three main dimensions: 1) the Human-to-Human Worldview, which reflects social, political, religious, and economic structures that define class roles and social positions. It highlights patron-client relationships and the acceptance of social hierarchy grounded in beliefs in karma and merit-making; 2) the Human-to-Nature Worldview which demonstrates the close relationship between the people and their natural environment. The inhabitants adapted to the geographical landscape, and their economic system, largely dependent on natural resources, illustrates a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature; and 3) the Human-to-Supernatural Worldview, which shows that Buddhism, together with beliefs in sacred beings, spirits, and mystical practices, played a significant role in shaping everyday life. This study demonstrates that “Battambang During the Time of the Lord Governor” is not merely a historical record but also a valuable source that reflects the multifaceted worldview of the Battambang people. The findings contribute to cross-cultural understanding and highlight the significance of studying history through Khmer-language documents.
