High-maintenance environmental migration: Thematic Netnography on Filipino Fundamental Baptist and Iglesia ni Cristo drifts to the United Methodist
Abstract
This study investigates religious migration in the Philippines, specifically the transition from High-Maintenance Environments (HMEs)—such as the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) and Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) churches—to the United Methodist Church (UMC). Utilizing a thematic netnography of Reddit discourses, the research identifies the socio-psychological and theological drivers of this denominational shift. Findings reveal that HMEs exert control through centralized, total obedience hierarchies and temporal demands, which create high exit costs via social encapsulation. Primary push factors include rigid epistemological structures that stifle critical thinking and exclusionary stances on gender. In contrast, the UMC acts as a via media, attracting migrants through the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, which integrates reason and experience with scripture and tradition. The transition is further characterized by a shift from inward-looking pietism toward social holiness, emphasizing egalitarian ministry and social justice. The study concludes that individuals migrate to the UMC seeking a safe harbor that aligns with their evolving moral intuitions, trading legalistic dogmatism for a mission-oriented “faith in action” that allows for intellectual flexibility and robust social engagement.
