Abstract

Pregnancy involves numerous physiological transformations, such as shifts in the center of mass, heightened pressure on internal organs, weight gain, laxity in ligaments and connective tissues, and changes in posture. Physiotherapy benefits expectant mothers through various techniques, which encompass safe exercises, manual therapy, hydrotherapy, prenatal massage, pelvic floor exercises, and education on posture. The study aims to assess the comprehension and perception of physiotherapy practices among pregnant women and their significance during pregnancy in chosen hospitals in Port Sudan. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in four hospitals in Port Sudan. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire distributed to 300 pregnant women attending antenatal clinics. Data were encoded and input into Microsoft Excel. Descriptive statistics were utilized to summarize the findings. Ethical approval was secured, written informed consent was obtained from participants, and confidentiality was upheld. Around 51% of the participants reported being aware of physiotherapy during pregnancy. There were 12% of the participants indicated that they had sought the services of a physiotherapist during this period. There were 67% of the participants did not consult physiotherapists during their pregnancy due to a lack of understanding that it was an option. there were 60% of the participants believed that physiotherapy is not safe during pregnancy. The study indicated that 82.6% of participants are concerned that physiotherapy sessions during pregnancy may lead to abortion. The lack of understanding regarding the role of physiotherapy during pregnancy influences both the perceptions and attitudes of pregnant women. Outreach programs aimed at spreading information about the benefits of physiotherapy exercises during pregnancy are needed.
