Abstract

Aging is a phase of the life cycle, understood as a continuous and gradual process of natural changes that begins in adulthood. It is a phase marked by many changes, whether in routine, body, or mentality. Aging has aroused attentive eyes. The perception of the phenomenon leads us to consider longevity due to technological advances, in the area of health and medical achievements. This article aims to reflectively analyze the process of grieving aging, and how real and expected changes can affect the behavior of the elderly, taking into account genetics, economics and the environment in which they live with their life experiences. Aging is a process of loss, a journey towards finitude, with symbolic deaths of dreams and projects. To delimit, however, the theme is necessary, first of all, to answer the question: Does the impact of symbolic and real losses that occur in daily life intensify the grieving process? For research, we searched for scientific articles in Portuguese, with some relevance to the proposed theme. The analyzed articles seek to analyze how aging is perceived and what is the symbolic understanding of the death of dreams and projects, in this process of construction of meanings.
