Abstract
The theory of reading developed in Althusser’s Preface to Reading Capital is situated within a critique of models that posit immediate access to meaning. The forms of reading that Althusser designates as religious, retrospective, and empiricist presuppose a specular and transparent relation between subject and object, in which meaning appears as a given content. Against this framework, materialist reading is configured as a practice that works on discursive structures and their silences, producing its object through displacement and discontinuity. In this perspective, reading ceases to be the restitution of a hidden meaning and becomes a process of theoretical production.
