Abstract

A systematic literature review was conducted focusing on cross-sectional study designs in the PubMed, LILACS, and SciELO databases. The prevalence of anemia in the evaluated studies ranged from 18% to 67%. Low family income, inadequate diet, age group, and lack of iron supplementation were the main risk factors identified. It was concluded that iron deficiency anemia rates decreased from an average of 53% before 2005 to 33% after 2005, coinciding with the implementation of the National Iron Supplementation Policy.
