Abstract

Understanding the determinants of medical specialty selection is essential for effective healthcare workforce planning, particularly within highly competitive fields such as dermatology. This narrative review synthesizes existing literature regarding how medical students in Brazil perceive professional affinity, defined as the alignment be-tween personal values, skills, and career aspirations, and how this construct influences their specialization choices. Through a search of databases including PubMed and Google Scholar, the analysis identifies primary themes governing these decisions. Dermatology’s appeal largely centers on favorable lifestyle factors, a balance of clinical and procedural work, and anticipated professional satisfaction. However, professional affinity plays a mediating role, driving decisions through affective bonds and value alignment. The review further indicates that access is often constrained by market competitiveness and socioeconomic barriers, reflecting the background of many Brazilian medical graduates.
