Abstract

Choosing a medical specialty is a major decision in a physician's career, with wide-ranging effects on healthcare workforce planning, service quality, and personal job satisfaction. In Brazil, where healthcare demands are constantly changing within a competitive medical education system, understanding how medical students develop an interest in specific specialties, especially psychiatry, has become increasingly important. This narrative review compiles current evidence on factors shaping Brazilian medical students' views of psychiatry as a career, including motivations, barriers, and contextual factors influencing their choice. The review shows that psychiatry has a paradoxical role: seen as a controllable lifestyle specialty appealing to research-focused students, yet facing high rejection rates due to ongoing stigma, negative messages from the hidden curriculum, and limited early exposure. These insights highlight the need for comprehensive educational efforts to address systemic barriers and support genuine professional identity development aligned with students' core values and strengths.
