The Role of Language in Promoting Equality in Multicultural Classrooms
Abstract
This study explores how language practices contribute to equality in multicultural classroom settings. As linguistic diversity increases in educational institutions, language becomes a decisive factor influencing access to learning, participation, and academic achievement. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research was conducted at MTs Al-Qodiri, a school with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Data were gathered through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with school leaders, teachers, and students, as well as analysis of instructional documents. The findings show that inclusive language strategies, such as scaffolding academic language, acknowledging students’ linguistic identities, and encouraging flexible classroom communication, support equitable participation. Conversely, inflexible and exclusive language use tends to disadvantage students with limited proficiency in the dominant instructional language. This research concludes that language functions not only as a medium of instruction but also as a social mechanism shaping equality and inclusion in multicultural classrooms.
