Abstract

Adapted sports in Ecuador have evolved significantly since the 1970s, with an increase in inclusion and recognition of the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). Objective: This study aims to analyze the body composition and anthropometric measurements of athletes with ID in the Federation of Sports for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (FEDEDI) in Pichincha. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 41 athletes (mean age 24 years) belonging to five sports disciplines. Bioimpedance measures were used to assess body composition. Results: Significant variations were found in anthropometric measures among different sports, with an average BMI suggesting a risk of overweight in the sample. Measures of lean and fat mass correlated with physical performance. Conclusions: Findings indicate that body composition is a key factor in the performance of athletes with ID. It is essential to adapt training and nutrition programs to optimize health and sports performance in this population. Additionally, further research is needed to establish specific evaluation guidelines for athletes with ID.
