DETERMINANTS OF MILLET VALUE CHAIN PARTICIPATION IN KATSINA STATE
Abstract
The study analyzed the determinants of millet value chain participation in Katsina State, Nigeria. Primary data was collected from 300 millet Value Chain Actors (VCA) selected using a multistage sampling technique across the LGAs of Katsina State eminent in millet farming using well-structured questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics and Tobit regression model. The results of the descriptive statistics showed that 68.67% of millet VCA were farmers, 18.67% marketers while 12.67% were processors. Majority (86.62%) of the millet VCA were male and mostly married (82%).The result of the Tobit regression analysis of the determinants of participation in millet activities revealed that gender (p = 0.004), marital status (p = 0.001), land size (p= 0.000), access to market (p = 0.014) as well as income are significant determinants of participation in millet value chain activities in the study area. The study recommends that there is need to address gender disparities, enhance income stability, expand land access by enlightening traditional rulers and improve market connectivity by the state government through agricultural trade fairs, provision of improved millet seedling, forming women agricultural groups so that participation in millet value chain activities can be increased in the state.
