THE ROLE OF HERITAGE SITES IN PROMOTING LOCAL ECONOMIC GROWTH IN IBADAN METROPOLIS
Abstract
This study critically examines the role of heritage sites in promoting local economic growth in the Ibadan metropolis, Nigeria. Using a quantitative research approach, 385 structured questionnaires were distributed across five local government areas (LGAs) within the metropolis—Ibadan South-East (42), South-West (83), North (126), North-West (72), and North-East (43). A total of 366 responses were returned, while 19 were unreturned, representing a 95.1% response rate. The survey aimed to assess public perception of the economic significance of heritage sites in these areas, with a focus on their contributions to local development and employment creation. Findings indicate a broad consensus among respondents on the economic value of heritage sites. Overall, the majority affirmed that heritage sites contribute meaningfully to the economic wellbeing of their host communities. The highest level of agreement was recorded in Ibadan North-West, where 84.7% of respondents strongly supported the economic relevance of heritage sites. In contrast, Ibadan North recorded the lowest proportion of agreement at 61.9%, suggesting regional variations in awareness, utilization, or investment in heritage infrastructure. Furthermore, the study highlights the strong employment-creation potential of heritage sites. An overwhelming 90% of respondents agreed that these sites function as hubs for job creation, particularly in tourism-related services, informal trade, and cultural preservation activities. These findings underscore the strategic role heritage assets can play in fostering inclusive urban development, if effectively managed and promoted. The study concludes that while heritage sites across Ibadan metropolis hold significant economic promise, maximizing their impact requires localized investment, awareness campaigns, and collaborative planning between government and community stakeholders. The critical analysis calls for policy frameworks that integrate heritage development with broader economic and tourism strategies in the city.
