Abstract

This study examined the impact of agricultural marketing policies on food security in North East Nigeria. Specifically, it investigated the effects of pricing policies, market infrastructure development, subsidies and incentives, and market information systems on food security. A survey research design was adopted, targeting smallholder farmers across the region. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the population, 1,500 farmers were randomly selected, and primary data were collected through structured, closed-ended questionnaires. The data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis via SPSS version 22.0 to assess the relationship between agricultural marketing policies and food security. The findings reveal that pricing policies significantly enhance food security by ensuring affordability and stability. Market infrastructure development was identified as the most influential factor, improving distribution efficiency and reducing post-harvest losses. Subsidies and incentives were found to strengthen farmers’ productive capacity and stabilize food supply, while effective market information systems positively influenced farmers’ decision-making and market participation. These results collectively indicate that well-coordinated and integrated agricultural marketing policies are crucial for addressing food security challenges in North East Nigeria. Based on the findings, the study recommends the design and implementation of effective pricing policies, large-scale investment in market infrastructure, expanded and transparent subsidy programs, and strengthened market information systems through digital technologies and extension services. This research contributes to knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the critical role of agricultural marketing policies in enhancing regional food security.
