FIRM CHARACTERISTICS AND RISK DISCLOSURE OF LISTED DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between firm characteristics and risk disclosure practices among listed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria. Using a sample of eight (8) banks listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) from 2017 to 2024, data were collected from annual reports and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis. The findings reveal that firm size and leverage exhibit a significant negative relationship with risk disclosure, indicating that larger and more leveraged banks tend to disclose less risk information. In contrast, firm age showed no significant effect on disclosure levels. The study recommends that bank managers and regulators prioritize firm size and leverage in risk reporting frameworks, while reducing emphasis on firm age as a determinant of disclosure quality. These insights contribute to the discourse on corporate transparency and risk communication in emerging banking sectors.
