COMPETENCIES REQUIRED IN RICE PRODUCTION FOR IMPROVED TEACHING AND LEARNING BY AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE STUDENTS IN AN ERA OF FOOD UNCERTAINTY IN JALINGO LGA ,TARABA STATE
Abstract
In an era of food uncertainty, the need for sustainable crop production skills is increasingly critical. Rice production, as one of the most important staple crops in Nigeria, plays a central role in enhancing food security and reducing dependence on imports. This study investigates the competencies in rice production required for improved teaching and learning of Agricultural Science among students in Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, targeting Agricultural Science teachers and senior secondary school students. Data was gathered through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The research aims to identify gaps in students’ practical competencies in rice cultivation, processing, and management, while also evaluating how these skills can be effectively integrated into classroom instruction. Findings are expected to provide insights into strengthening Agricultural Science curricula, improving pedagogical approaches, and fostering hands-on training that equips students for self-reliance. Ultimately, this study contributes to the promotion of food sustainability, empowers students with relevant agricultural supports Nigeria’s broader agenda of achieving national skills, and food security.
