Abstract

Malnutrition remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where access to affordable and nutritious food is limited. Fura da Nono, a traditional fermented dairy beverage widely consumed in Northern Nigeria, is believed to offer substantial nutritional benefits. However, scientific data on its precise role in malnutrition management remains scarce. This study assessed the knowledge level of the nutritional value of Fura da Nono in the management of malnutrition in Bauchi Central Senatorial District. A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was employed to select 600 respondents. Data was collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-Square tests. The results revealed that 75% of the respondents recognized Fura da Nono as a nutrient-rich beverage, with reported benefits including improved digestion, energy levels, and immune function. The Chi-Square analysis (p = 0.000) confirmed a strong association between Fura da Nono consumption and improved nutritional health, reinforcing its role in malnutrition management. The study concludes that Fura da Nono is a viable dietary intervention for combating malnutrition due to its high protein, probiotic, and micronutrient content. The study recommended that government intervention in dairy production, nutrition education and campaigns on the drink, and large-scale commercialization of the drink should be encourage to enhance accessibility and public health impact.
