Abstract

Writing is the medium of transition between thought and knowledge, between inner knowledge and open conversation. Academic and research writing is not just a technical art, but a form of thinking, questioning and engaging in the common search of truth. The book Academic and Research Writing: From Ideas to Publication is authored under the assumption that good writing develops out of good thinking and that both can be developed through practice, coaching and self-reflection. Many students, researchers and teachers in any field usually have the same problems: how to work out ideas into clear arguments, how to use sources in a manner that is ethical, how to write confidently, or how to fulfill the requirements of academic communities. Academic writing is viewed as strict and frightening by many learners and is full of rules and formalities. However, deep down, academic writing is merely a rigorous kind of dialogue one where writers pay keen attention to what has already been said, meditate about ideas, and present a line of reasoning of their own.The book is structured in a way that it takes readers through the whole process of writing academic and research papers. It starts with the basics of academic writing, its aims, organization and procedures and slowly progresses to the more skilled types like argumentation, critical writing, disciplinary writing styles, clarity of language and lastly, publication and presentation of academic work. Each chapter is constructed on the one before it and it demonstrates that there is no single writing, but it is constant questioning, drafting, refining and revising. The chapters focus on the fact that writing is not anonymous to thinking. In writing we learn what we really are sure of, what we really know and all that is yet unclear. Writing can also make us challenge our thoughts, sharpen our arguments and be able to communicate responsibly with others. The same main principles, regardless of whether it is a case of an essay, a research paper, a thesis, or a journal article, are clarity, evidence, logic, and ethical integrity. This book targets students, early-career researchers and teachers, who operate in various disciplinary and cultural settings. It is aware that academic writing does not take the same form everywhere; it varies in different disciplines like humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and professional studies. Simultaneously, it emphasizes the common set of values, which hold all scholarly writing in common: respect towards evidence, good judgment, and veracity in representation. This book is aimed not to give strict formulae but to work out the cognition. It does not just present rules but also provides the rationale behind the academic conventions, therefore, the readers would apply them intelligently instead of applying them blindly. Examples, explanations and discussions are made in easily accessible language such that even sophisticated concepts regarding writing and research may be comprehended by the learners at various levels.Last but not least, this book is authored in high regard of learners. Being a non-writer is not the same as being dumb, rather it is learning something complicated that requires time. All good writers were already beginners. Through patience, practice and advice, anyone can learn that he can write with clarity, make a case and add value to both academic and professional life.Should this book assist readers in thinking more clearly, writing more confidently and engaging in the world of ideas more, it will surely have served its end.
