Organizarea militară a Banatului de Caransebeș-Lugoj reflectată în izvoarele scrise
Abstract
The Banat of Caransebeș-Lugoj functioned between 1552 and 1658 as an administrative and military unit with autonomous status within the Principality of Transylvania. The constant threat of Ottoman annexation meant that local authorities made defending the region a top priority. This paper aims to analyze the military organisation of the Banat of Caransebeș-Lugoj, from both a technical and human factor perspective.Among the topics addressed are the defensive fortification system of the Highland Banat, the supply of the fortresses, the quantitative and qualitative assessment of the Banat troops (including a discussion of the main military operations in which they took part) and the funding sources for the Banat's military policy. The approach is based primarily on a comparative analysis of the information provided by written sources (documents and narrative sources), without neglecting the results of previous studies. The research also benefits from the consultation of a previously unpublished document that contributes to the reconstruction of how the region's military expenses were financed.
