Abstract

The documents drawn up on the occasion of the witch trials in Transylvania and Arad County in the 18 th century contain important information about the life and mentality of the inhabitants. The data on those involved in the trials and the statements of the witnesses provide numerous details about the family members, the relationships between them, the health problems they faced and the solutions they sought to solve them. The people accused of witchcraft, in most cases women, but sometimes men, were healers. The relationships between the members of the communities and the connections with the inhabitants of nearby settlements are aspects that can be found in the pages of the investigations.Although witchcraft trials in Arad County (as in all of Transylvania) were judged by magistrates, in the 18th century, with the consolidation of the Austrian occupation, strong influences from witchcraft trials in Western Europe can be observed. The documents drawn up on the occasion of the witchcraft trials in Arad County, through the richness and variety of information regarding daily life and mentality, constitute an important historical treasure trove for the knowledge of the realities of this area in the 18 th century.
