Abstract

Withing the context of the German enlightenment, which aimed to educate the people, Central European countries introduced German into schools. In Arad, the study of the German was taught in the 18 th century at the Small Gymnasium, which functioned alongside the Roman Catholic Church. In fact, we must not forget that a large part of the population, who came to the city in 1702, when Arad became a chamber city, was of German ethnicity, nor that in 1749 a Catholic school with a German teacher was opened. Therefore, the acquisition of books in German was a natural consequence, as the most prestigious population in the old city of Arad read in German. From a thematic perspective, these books, which implicitly symbolized erudition, attempted to cover the encyclopedism of the age.
