Abstract

The interwar period presents several specific characteristics in the evolution of the health sector, particularly in Arad and, in general, in Romanian society. Thus, depending on the adversities it had to endure, the population was forced to cope with changes in health legislation and numerous diseases, which increased dramatically over time and marked the evolution of society. The subject of social diseases is very interesting in light of the intense activity of health offices, which began after World War I with the aim of combating them. From this point of view, I have analyzed some social diseases that have marked the health of the population in Arad, in terms of the number of cases and deaths caused. Thus, I have presented some infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, malaria, venereal diseases, and cancer, through the lens of the legislation and cases found in the records of the time. The evolution of the health sector is reflected in the introduction of free consultations, the importance given to preventive immunizations and prophylactic activities, and the organization of conferences by doctors on various topics related to curative and preventive medicine. It is important to show the conditions that triggered those diseases, the measures taken by public authorities to prevent their spread, the methods of treatment, and the prophylactic measures imposed by laws and special regulations for each social disease. All of these are evidenced by various statistics on the evolution of diseases over time, morbidity and mortality rates, compiled at the level of health districts in Arad County.
