Abstract

Statistical literacy is a fundamental competency in the training of veterinary medicine professionals due to its direct application in the interpretation of quantitative information and evidence-based decision-making. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the level of statistical literacy and its relationship with academic performance in the biostatistics course among veterinary medicine students. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted, applying a statistical literacy test contextualized to the veterinary field to 182 students who had taken the course. The analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics; the non-parametric Kruskal - Wallis test was used for comparisons between semesters. The results showed that most students presented medium to high levels of statistical literacy, with no statistically significant differences observed in test scores between the sixth, eighth, and tenth semesters. It is concluded that progress during the academic semester is not necessarily associated with a progressive strengthening of statistical literacy, highlighting the need to promote pedagogical strategies focused on the contextualized application of statistics in veterinary education
