Abstract

The teaching of Mathematics at the primary education level faces several challenges related to low student motivation, limited use of innovative teaching strategies, and insufficient contextualization of content. In response to this situation, this article aims to analyze the application of Problem Based Learning (PBL) as a teaching strategy in fifth grade Mathematics instruction at the primary level. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach with an action research design, employing techniques such as participant observation, interviews, and the researcher’s journal. The findings indicate that the incorporation of real life problem situations, playful activities, and mental problem solving tasks enhances student motivation, active participation, and the development of logical, creative, and critical thinking skills. It is concluded that Problem Based Learning represents a relevant and effective strategy for promoting meaningful learning in Mathematics and for strengthening teaching practices at the primary education level.
