Examples Ottoman-Turkish Administrative Terminology in Venetian Historical Sources of the 16th Century
Abstract
This paper analyzes the complex cultural and linguistic connections between Venice and the Ottoman Empire in 16th century, emphasizing the significance of diplomatic ties in fostering mutual cultural, literary, and linguistic interweaving. Venetian representatives in Constantinople facilitated the exchange of ideas and languages, while dragomans, as educated translators, contributed to the integration of Turkish terms (Turkish loan words) into the Italian language, particularly in administrative and military-political terminology. These linguistic phenomena illuminate broader cultural interactions and shape Venetian identity, as well as the perception of the Orient within a European context. Through an analysis of Venetian office production, the paper provides insights into the importance of documents and travel accounts as sources for the study of literature and social dynamics of the time.
