Correlation and Regression Analysis for Yield and its Associated Traits in Hexaploid Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)
Abstract
An experiment was conducted in 2023–2024 at the Wheat and Barley Research Institute, Tandojam, to analyze correlation and regression in eight hexaploid wheat cultivars (TD-1, Kiran-95, Khirman, Marvi-2000, Bakhar-2002, Benazir, TJ-83, Moomal) for nine yield-related traits using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Traits recorded included plant height, tillers per plant, spike length, spikelets per spike, grains per spike, grain yield per plant, 1000-grain weight, biological yield, and harvest index. All genotypes showed significant differences (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05). Mean performance revealed TD-1 had the shortest plants (80 cm), most tillers (7.39), and highest grains per spike (57.38); Kiran-95 had the longest spikes (12.40 cm); Benazir the most spikelets per spike (18.33); TJ-83 the highest grain yield (11.43 g) and harvest index (47.86%); Khirman the highest 1000-grain weight (46.73 g); and Bakhar-2002 the maximum biological yield (24.76 g). Grain yield per plant showed strong positive correlations with all traits (r = 0.5285**–0.9425**), with the greatest variation and contribution from tillers per plant (88.83%, 0.8773 g). These genotypes are promising for selection in future breeding programs.
