Abstract

The SHRUG is an open-access geographic data platform comprising dozens of linked datasets covering India's 500,000+ villages and 8,000+ towns from 1991 to 2013. All data is linked using a common geographic identifier (shrid) that ensures consistent boundaries across census rounds. Covers demography, non-farm employment, political outcomes, forest cover, night lights, and administrative programs. Critical spatial backbone for subnational analysis in India. Licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 for non-commercial use; users must share derivative data with SHRUG identifiers.
