Abstract

The international security environment of the next decade is in detail unknowable. In this context of an inherently murky future, the historical record of great power behaviour in previous strategically dynamic periods comparable to the current situation can be instructive. That is especially the case with earlier eras involving dissatisfied, aggressive and expansionist powers. Geopolitical experience and an understanding of underlying geopolitical forces thus offer valuable insights for current strategists and planners tasked with deterring aggression and defending the liberal international order.
