Exploring Leadership: Autoethnographic Insights into Leading a Turnaround at a Low-Performing Elementary School
Abstract
Despite numerous reform efforts, turning around low-performing schools remains a persistent challenge for educational leaders. While research has examined various leadership strategies for school improvement, firsthand accounts from successful turnaround leaders are scarce. This autoethnographic study addresses this gap by reflecting on the author's experience transforming a struggling elementary school into a successful one within a single academic year. The study identifies key factors and critical strategies that contributed to this rapid improvement, offering insights into the triumphs and challenges encountered along the way. By leveraging the power of autoethnography, this research provides educational leaders with practical lessons for implementing similar transformations. This investigation enhances our understanding of how effective leadership drives meaningful change in previously low-performing schools. Moreover, it informs policy and practice, guiding systemic improvement efforts to improve student achievement.
