Abstract

Background: Dermocosmetics encompasses products that stand astride of health and aesthetics, designed according to the quality and control standards applicable to medicines. The quality of the counsel associated with their dispensation is a key factor in their effectiveness and safety. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of dermocosmetic counsel provided in pharmacies and licensed establishments in Cotonou in 2024. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study conducted from June 3 to September 30, 2024. The sample was comprehensive and included personnel involved in dispensing dermocosmetic products in 89 pharmacies and 33 licensed retail establishments. Data was collected using a standardized questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistical methods. Results: A total of 501 participants were included. The average age of pharmacy staff was 29.9 ± 5.8 years, compared to 35.6 ± 10.1 years in licensed establishments. Women outnumbered men (sex ratio = 0.2). In pharmacies, pharmacy assistants represented 72.5% of the staff, with 45.8% having less than 5 years of professional experience. In licensed establishments, the majority were employees, a large proportion of whom had 5 to 10 years of experience. As concerns counsel quality, 46.7% of pharmacy staff and 33.3% of staff in licensed establishments rated their knowledge as average. The practices observed were also average, according to 56% of pharmacy staff and 62.3% of employees in licensed establishments. Conclusion: The quality of dermocosmetic advice provided in Cotonou appears to be generally average, both in pharmacies and in licensed establishments. These results highlight the need to strengthen continuous training and improve counsel practices to optimize dermocosmetic care.
