Abstract

AI systems are rapidly transforming how society creates and consumes information. Their widespread use – especially in education – raises growing concerns about accuracy, reliability, and the preservation of historical integrity. In our analysis of how AI presents historical information, systematic problems were found, such as fabricated content, chronological distortions, bias through data prevalence, and language manipulation vulnerabilities.Without immediate action, future generations may be compromised on their understanding of the past and ability to participate in a democratic society. This brief presents three recommendations for US federal and state governmental bodies to protect against AI-generated historical misinformation:protect youth by developing specific safeguards, comprehensive educational guidelines and teacher training resources to help students identify and properly evaluate AI-generated historical content, protect culture by establishing an independent review board, annual accuracy assessments, and collaborative industry frameworks to monitor and improve AI historical accuracy and alignment in publicly-available tools, andprotect country by creating protocols to identify systematic misinformation campaigns, assigning agency coordination responsibility, and developing research programs to counter AI-mediated information warfare.Moniz at al.
