Abstract

A geological map is a synthesis of the geological structure of a given area.Using conventional colours and symbols, an integrated geological cross--section, and an explanatory text, the map illustrates the characteristics of recognized rocks and their mutual surface, spatial and temporal relationships.A geological map is the basis for almost every geological activity: economic, scientific and educational.Geological cartography is one of the most important tasks of the national geological survey. The article highlights the importance and diversity of Polish Geological Institute -National Research Institute (PGI-NRI)'s activities in the field of map production, in particular the Detailed Geological Map of Poland (DGMP) at a scale of 1 : 50,000.The article describes the individual stages of updating the detailed geological map: preparation of the author's geodatabase ® author's work ® internal review/supervision ® reviews and opinions of the Geological Studies Commission ® author's corrections ® substantive editing ® technical editing ® publication of the map.Samples of working materials and the final result of the update work are also presented. In June 2025, a tranche consisting of 125 updated SMGP sheets was completed.Thirteen map sheets were honoured by the Cartographic Elaboration Commission. At present, almost 90% of the country's area has an updated image of its geological structure.Currently, the 125 sheets of the SMGP prepared by the authors are being edited and work is underway to update the remaining 86 sheets.
