Ząb świniowatego z miocenu Paratetydy południowej Polski
Abstract
Redaktor prowadz¹cy: Micha³ RakociñskiA b s t r a c t. Suidae have existed for almost 20 million years in many regions of the world, inhabiting diverse terrestrial environments. In Poland, they have previously been recorded from Miocene terrestrial environments in Lower Silesia (southern Poland) and the Kleszczów Graben (central Poland).Currently, one preserved molar, assigned to Suidae, has been documented in the southern margin of the Holy Cross Mountains. It was found in a sand layer that formed in the marine zone of the northern Paratethys. The well-preserved tooth indicates that it did not undergo long-term transport within a high-energy marine environment. It is difficult to definitively answer the question of how the animal ended up in the marine environment: did it fell victim to a predator in the coastal zone, or perhaps perished there. It is also plausible that the animal, being an excellent swimmer, tried to get from one of the many islands in the Zygmuntów area to another, and then fell victim to a predator, e.g.Megalodon,whose remains are common in the study area.
