Mixed-Mode Stress Intensity Factor Evaluation Using the Virtual Grid Stress Recovery (VGSR) and Adaptive Mesh Refinement
Abstract
This study presents a combined approach to improve the accuracy of mixed-mode stress intensity factor (SIF) evaluation, which uses the virtual grid stress recovery (VGSR) technique and adaptive mesh refinement. The VGSR method is used to generate a smoother and more accurate stress field by interpolating finite element displacements from unstructured elements onto a structured virtual grid, thereby reducing errors associated with an integral domain in SIF evaluation. To improve the accuracy of the underlying displacement field, adaptive remeshing based on von Mises stress is performed in two successive steps using Abaqus. The method is applied to an inclined penny-shaped crack in mixed-mode, where SIFs are computed using the interaction integral. The results show that two-step adaptive refinement significantly improves SIF accuracy, demonstrating the effectiveness of combining VGSR with adaptive meshing for linear fracture analysis.
