Paradigma de protesta y desconfianza mediática en tuits sobre la cobertura del estallido social en Chile
Abstract
This article presents the results of a quantitative and qualitative analysis of tweets published in Chile between 2019 and 2020 about media coverage of the social uprising, with a focus on television. The study was conducted to understand the criticisms made by social media users regarding perceived biases in the representation of the demonstrations and their protagonists, using the protest paradigm and the phenomenon of media distrust as conceptual frameworks. Based on a mixed-methods approach and grounded theory, we employed sentiment analysis and qualitative analysis based on emergent categories to identify users' main positions on this coverage, as well as the arguments they provided to support them. We conclude that users' negative perception of the media’s role, specifically television, transcends political stances for or against the demonstrations, suggesting a significant but non-linear relationship between the protest paradigm and media distrust within the context of a hybrid media system.
