No tan visibles, no tan iguales: cobertura y tratamiento del deporte femenino
Abstract
This study examines the visibility and journalistic treatment of women’s sport in La 1 (CRTVE) evening newscast between 2021 and 2024, against a backdrop of heightened public attention and regulatory momentum on gender equality. We conducted a multimodal content analysis of the sports segment of the 21h Telediario from March of 2021 to 2024 (117 editions, over 13 hours) applying a previously validated coding instrument with high intercoder reliability (Holsti>0.90). Findings indicate that the increase observed in 2018 has stalled: coverage of women’s sport remains below that of men’s and is concentrated in a limited set of disciplines, shaped by footballization, which constrains narrative diversity and the availability of female role models. Androcentric tendencies persist in journalistic treatment (source selection, framing, and attribute emphasis), leaving room to improve newsworthiness criteria and plurality. We conclude that the public broadcaster has yet to guarantee equitable coverage or fully equal treatment. We recommend specific editorial policies and monitoring indicators to diversify content and voices, alongside gender-sensitivity training for newsrooms. Keywords: feminism, gender equality, women’s sport, media coverage, news broadcast, sports journalism.
