Replication Data for: What Is Killing the Multifamily Condominium? Testing the Liability-Law Hypothesis in California and New Jersey
Abstract
Complete replication package for the article published in the Journal of Urban Affairs. Tier 1 (manuscript reproduction): the knitr/LaTeX manuscript source, the 14 R scripts it sources, and all data they read; a clean build reproduces the accepted manuscript exactly (verified byte-identical .tex). Tier 2 (data construction): the full pipeline that classified 2013-2019 multifamily condominium and rental projects in Los Angeles County and Northern New Jersey from assessor/parcel records and building footprints, assembled block-group demographics (ACS 2008-2012, EPA Smart Location Database), and computed multimodal accessibility to high-wage jobs (LEHD LODES, r5r routing on OpenStreetMap + GTFS), including all raw source snapshots. Both tiers were verified on 2026-06-09: the Tier 1 build reproduces the accepted manuscript byte-identically, and the full Tier 2 pipeline (build-pipeline.sh, ~3 hours) was re-executed from the raw files alone and again reproduced the accepted manuscript byte-identically. See README.md for build instructions, data provenance, and licensing; see MANIFEST.md for per-file checksums. R package versions are pinned in renv.lock; the Python environment is in python-environment.yml. Files compressed as .gz/.tar.gz must be decompressed before re-running Tier 2 scripts (not needed for Tier 1).
