Abstract

The Local Business Impact Index, which focuses specifically on the presence of independently owned businesses. This index is particularly important given that music zones themselves are defined by their independence from corporate chains. This index helps distinguish zones that reinforce local economic resilience from those that may be more commercially homogenized. The local business impact index treats 109 music zones, clusters of at least five independent music venues, on 4,190 local businesses across the U.S. The vast majority of surrounding businesses, approximately 95%, are locally owned, suggesting that music zones play a critical role in sustaining independent commercial ecosystems. Furthermore, data is categorized by type of establishment. Finally, the index includes total business impact as well as more specifically local business impact as categorized as independent local business with less than three locations in the city.
