Assessing a TSN simulator with hardware measurements
Abstract
To meet the new needs of deterministic networks, the IEEE has proposed an extension to Ethernet called Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). Among other things, this extension makes it possible to achieve low latency performance with availability equivalent to or better than current solutions, to unify high-speed networks and real-time field buses, and is based on open, multi-industry standards. Nevertheless, this extension introduces a certain complexity (e.g. interaction between mechanisms, search for the optimal configuration, ...) which needs to be studied. To achieve this goal with a low investment in time and hardware, simulation is the ideal tool. But for the results to be meaningful, we need to ensure that the simulation behavior is close to that of the hardware. So in this paper, we characterize the behavior of a TSN switch and use these characterization results to calibrate the behavior of a simulated switch.
