Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the most serious health problems affecting women in India and is currently the most commonly diagnosed cancer among them. Over the years, the number of breast cancer cases has been increasing, mainly due to lack of early detection and delayed medical attention. Young women are often not well informed about breast cancer, its risk factors and early warning signs. Many of them believe that breast cancer occurs only in older women, which reduces their perceived risk. In addition, social stigma, fear, and lack of open discussion about women’s health further limit preventive practices such as self-examination and screening. The present survey-based study focuses on assessing the level of knowledge, awareness, and preventive practices related to breast cancer among young women living in Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. The study examines their understanding of risk factors, symptoms, and available screening methods, as well as their actual involvement in preventive health behaviors. The findings of this study are expected to highlight the existing gap between awareness and practice. The results will provide region-specific information that can help in planning effective health education programs and community-based awareness initiatives. Such interventions can play an important role in encouraging early detection and promoting healthy preventive behavior among young women in the long run.
