Abstract

Music has a significant influence on cognitive performance and memory retention because it interacts with several mental and environmental processes in the brain. Cognitive performance, which includes processes such as attention, memory, and information processing, is fundamental to effective learning and academic achievement. Music is a regular part of many students’ daily routines, especially during studying, and is often believed to influence focus and memory. Previous research suggests that music can affect cognitive functioning by activating multiple areas of the brain related to emotion, attention, and memory. However, findings across studies remain inconsistent, as music has been shown to both support and interfere with cognitive performance depending on various factors. The present study aims to explore the impact of music on cognitive performance and memory retention among students. It focuses on understanding how different musical characteristics, including genre, tempo, and listening conditions, influence attention, short term memory, and long term memory during learning tasks. Cognitive performance tasks and self report measures will be used to examine students’ responses to music during academic activities.
